We are a local public health department and health center focused and committed to improving our communities’ health and well-being through compassionate, high-quality care. We have about 120 full/part- time employees and about 10 contract employees. We are governed by two boards that provide strategic direction and oversight of agency functions. Salary: $128,013 – $202,482 annually. Starting salary based on qualifications and experience.
Hours: Full-time with 4-day workweek (M-Th from 7:00-5:30 pm). Potential to work outside normal hours for client needs, special events, or public health emergencies.

Job Summary: We are looking for an enthusiastic dental provider who wants to join us in providing general dental care for adults and children at our clinic in Ashe County and in our portable services serving Alleghany, Ashe, and Watauga Counties. We serve all patients regardless of ability to pay through a special sliding fee program and accept private and public insurance. The Public Health Dentist has an important role at AppHealthCare, working under the direction of the Dental Director in delivering excellent patient care and customer service alongside a team of dental assistants, dental hygienists, and office administrative specialists in serving clients at our dental office as well as community locations (primarily local schools) using our portable clinic. The primary role of the Public Health Dentist is to provide direct care for patients, but s/he also has the authority and responsibility of supporting the goals set out by the Dental Director in operating a successful dental practice with support from the AppHealthCare leadership team and Health Director/CEO.
Major Duties & Responsibilities
The primary purpose of this position is to provide general dentistry treatment; policy development for public health dental issues; public health education/promotion of dental topics; and to help with access to dental treatment. The primary focus of work will be providing preventive dental services within the Dental Office with preplanned community outreach to schools, senior centers, or other community locations through the use of a portable clinic with the potential to serve our full district (Alleghany, Ashe, and Watauga Counties).
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of modern dentistry and recent developments in the field of dentistry.
- Some knowledge of community health problems.
- Ability to perform dental work and treatments involved in the control of mouth diseases among children and adults.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with parents, teachers, and other appropriate groups in the community and institutions.
- Ability to prepare and deliver lectures on dental health education to various interested groups.
- Ability to perform dental work of a professional and independent nature.
- Ability to supervise and train dental assistants and residents.
Minimum Education & Experience
Licensed to practice dentistry in the State of North Carolina.
