We are a local public health department and health center focused and committed to improving our communities’ health and well-being through compassionate, high-quality care. We have about 120 full/part- time employees and about 10 contract employees. We are governed by two boards that provide strategic direction and oversight of agency functions. Salary: $75,624 – $145,344
Hours: Full-time, Monday-Friday, during clinic hours of 8:00 am-4:45 pm. Potential to work outside normal hours for client needs, special events, or public health emergencies.

Job Summary: Serves the clients of Watauga Health Center by providing preventive, primary care, and public health services.
Major Duties & Responsibilities
Provide high-quality preventive public health and primary care to clients seeking healthcare services. Collect health histories, perform physical exams, and offer education, counseling, and treatment to clients seeking healthcare services within Primary Care for adults and children, Maternal Health, Family Planning, Sexually Transmitted Disease, as well as Breast and Cervical Cancer Control programs. Interest in providing comprehensive acute and chronic care of adults and children. Medication-assisted treatment services for patients in recovery from opiate addiction is preferred. Ongoing supervision from the Medical Director includes defined patient care protocols and guidelines with availability for prompt consultation.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Thorough knowledge of techniques of interviewing, medical and relevant history taking, principles and practices of general medicine and disease states as they relate to the area of work; thorough knowledge of health appraisal tools, laboratory tests and findings, advanced physical assessment, advanced pathophysiology, advanced pharmacology, and therapeutic procedures as related to the area of work; thorough knowledge and ability to plan a regime of care based on assessment and findings; considerable knowledge of available resources and appropriate referral methods. Skills in performing clinical functions. Skill in assisting with routine surgical procedures. Ability to examine patients and detect abnormalities; ability to record accurately and completely all information necessary to evaluate and plan care and to convey this to the physician; ability to communicate orally; ability to teach and counsel individuals, families, and groups in areas of health maintenance, preventive medicine, and care of the sick; and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and to gain the confidence of patients and families and work effectively with them; some ability to plan and conduct in-service training programs. Work requires judgment in the application of accepted patient care protocols and medical guidelines in the area of assignment to determine the appropriate course of action.
Minimum Education & Experience
Licensed as a Physician Assistant by the North Carolina Medical Board or approved to practice as a Nurse Practitioner or Certified Nurse Midwife by the North Carolina Board of Nursing and the North Carolina Medical Board.

Our clinical providers can be reimbursed up to $2000 annually for Continuing Education purposes. Our Ashe and Alleghany clinics are NHSC-approved sites for the NHSC Loan Repayment Program. For clinicians with associate licenses in need of clinical supervision, AppHealthCare can cover up to $90 weekly for external supervision of your choosing or provide internal supervision if available. Our agency follows North Carolina’s state holiday schedule, which includes 12 paid holidays per year, in addition to earning 8 hours of annual leave and 8 hours of sick leave per month for new hires, which grows with service years.
