I was born in Indiana but grew up in Alabama. I did my undergraduate studies at UNC Chapel Hill and my graduate work at University of Tennessee, Knoxville and East Tennessee State University. I have been a family nurse practitioner (FNP) for over 20 years and have practiced in Florida, California, and North Carolina in a variety of settings. I am currently working full-time as a professor of nursing at Appalachian State University but continue to volunteer at AppHealthCare in Ashe and Alleghany counties providing healthcare services to farmworkers and their families and to some of our Latino/Latina immigrant families. I speak Spanish and get a lot of opportunities to use this second language with patients. I thoroughly enjoy living in the NC mountains where I do a lot of walking, hiking, gardening, and fruit gleaning. I have a wonderful partner (Tim) and a beautiful dog (Mie). I am interested in nutrition and other lifestyle habits to prevent disease.
